Ticket to Ride: Europe | The Board Game for People Who Say They Don't Play Board Games

Dinner's finished, nobody's reached for the remote yet, and the board unfolds into a map of Europe. Ten minutes later, someone who swore they weren't a "board game person" is quietly plotting a route from Edinburgh to Athens — and groaning when the person beside them claims the line to Paris first.

That's Ticket to Ride. On your turn you do one simple thing: collect coloured train cards, claim a route on the map, or draw a new secret destination to aim for. Connect the cities on your destination tickets to score big, and try not to get blocked along the way. It's the most recommended first game in the hobby for a reason — everyone understands it in one round, but it stays gripping right to the final train.

Why it works for first-timers and families

  • Taught in a few minutes. Three possible actions each turn, and you'll know them all before your first route.
  • A premise anyone can picture. Trains, a map, cities to connect — no gaming vocabulary needed.
  • Plays well from 2 to 5. Just as good as a couple after dinner as it is around a full family table.
  • Room to grow. The Europe edition adds tunnels, ferries and train stations, which give a bit more to think about once everyone's comfortable — and stations mean nobody gets completely stuck when a route is taken.
