The Quest for El Dorado | A Jungle Race Anyone Can Picture

The board stretches out like a map from an old adventure film: dense jungle, rushing rivers, a mountain pass and, somewhere on the far side, the lost city of gold. Within a few turns, the person who said they "don't really do board games" is leaning over the table, plotting a shortcut through the swamp and groaning when someone else's explorer cuts them off at the river.

Everyone starts their expedition with the same small hand of cards. You use them to move your explorer through the jungle, or to recruit better helpers — scouts, sailors, guides — who make your expedition faster from then on. First to reach El Dorado wins. That's the whole idea, and it's why nobody needs the rules explained twice.

Why it works so well at the table

  • A premise everyone gets instantly. A race through the jungle to a lost city — no gaming vocabulary required.
  • You can see yourself getting better. Every new helper you recruit makes your expedition visibly faster, which keeps everyone hooked right to the finish.
  • Rewards a little planning, forgives instinct. Thoughtful players get an edge, but nobody is punished for just going for it.
  • Different every time. The map is built from sections that can be rearranged, so no two races play out the same.

FAQ

Is this a good first "deck-building" game?
Yes. It's one of the most recommended introductions to deck-building — the idea of improving your hand of cards as you play — because the race makes it obvious how each new card helps you move faster.

Is it suitable for families?
Yes. The rules are simple enough for a mixed-age table, while still giving adults plenty of decisions to enjoy.
